Black Nomad Statement for Travelers About Coronavirus / COVID-19
These are dark times. No denying that.
Many of us have been directly or indirectly affected by the ongoing spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) this year.
For those of us based in Europe or the Americas, the ramifications of this pandemic have been unpredictable and even more pronounced. If you’re a traveller, travel plans may have been cancelled. Money may have been lost, and adventures put on hold.
If you’re a freelancer or a small business owner, work opportunities and income have probably been significantly affected.
If you or someone you care about has a pre-existing health condition, the situation is even more of a concern.
Know that we are here with you. As travellers, and people who are part of a small, yet big, travel community, we felt like we would be remiss not to comment on the situation.
We can’t stress enough: please listen to the experts.
Rely on official, trusted sources of information for guidance. Follow established sources that have a consistent and continued reputation of following the advice of scientists.
Please do not make travel plans during this pandemic solely on the advice of influencers, bloggers, or others. We understand the temptation may be great, but the risk is even greater.
For U.S. travellers, please refer to the general and country-specific travel advice from the Center for Disease Control. The situation is fluid, so it is important to stay up to date before making any decisions. If you must travel, it is important to look at the official advice from both your home government and the government of the location you will be visiting before making any travel-related decisions.
If your future travel plans have been affected, check cancellation rights and coverage with your airline or transportation provider and contact your travel insurer, if applicable. Note that many companies are changing their terms and conditions given the severity of the situation.
The IATA provides up to date, country specific information about entry requirements and border closures that could be helpful in planning.
Lastly, please follow the advice of local, national, and international medical bodies (such as the World Health Organisation) regarding best practices to protect yourself and others. This includes hygiene, prevention, and actions to take if you present symptoms or worry that you may have been exposed to the virus.
Above all else, please think of others and the role you play in bringing this pandemic to an end. We are all in this together.
Stay safe Nomads.
